CHIRON Project

The main goal of my CHIRON fellowship as an archaeologist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich) is to receive training and do research concerning 3-D reconstructions of archaeological sites, particularly with the aim of reconstructing the non-monumental quarters at archaeological sites, as these generally fall outside the scope of most 3-D modeling projects. Although domestic and artisanal quarters can yield a lot of useful information about the economy and ecology in ancient cities, they are usually neglected when modeling an archaeological site, as one prefers to concentrate on the esthetically attractive public buildings. An aspect of this research could be the use of geophysical data for this kind of 3-D reconstructions.
The combination of computer vision and graphics experts with the knowledge of a field archaeologist will, hopefully, lead to a fruitful collaboration and contribute to the goals of the CHIRON project.
